1971 - An idea that sparked a chain reaction
The story begins with a brilliant invention: a prototype U-lock for bicycles, created by inventor Stan Kaplan. Seeing its potential, Michael Zane - a creative, entrepreneurial spirit—immediately recognized the opportunity. He partnered with Kaplan and set out across America to show people why bike security mattered. And that’s how the Kryptonite brand was born.
1972 - 30 days. 30 nights. One lock. One legend.
The first major test of the Kryptonite U-lock didn’t happen in a lab - it happened on the streets. In Greenwich Village, New York, a simple three-speed bike was locked to a street sign. Removable parts were quickly stolen, but the lock and frame remained untouched for 30 days and nights. Attempts to pry or break it failed. The press took notice, and Kryptonite’s name was forever etched into cyclists’ collective memory.
1974 - K3 U-lock: a new level of practicality
The first integrated locking mechanism was born, along with a carrying bracket - making the lock not just secure, but convenient to transport. These innovations proved that Kryptonite thrived not just on a good idea, but on constant innovation.
1977 – Anti-theft protection that others could only envy
Kryptonite launched its Anti-Theft Protection Offer, a warranty program that provided financial security and sent a clear message: the company truly believed in its products. Competitors tried to copy it—without success.
That year also saw the release of the K4 U-lock: featuring a bent locking arm, easier handling, and the new “Overhead Cam” locking system, built to withstand even the toughest break-in attempts.
1994 – The New York Lock: striking back at thieves
By the late ’80s, some parts of New York City saw so many insurance claims that Kryptonite temporarily withdrew the Anti-Theft Protection Offer there. They didn’t back down, though - instead, they developed the New York Lock, the toughest lock for the toughest streets.
Its comeback was bold: in 1994, the New York Post challenged the lock—could it survive 48 hours on a notorious East Village corner? The answer: yes. A bright green Univega road bike remained untouched after two days. The legend had entered a new chapter.
2001 – Key registration: a new dimension of security
Kryptonite launched the Key Safe program, allowing users to register their lock keys. If they were lost, the first two replacements were free. Another step showing that this brand doesn’t just make locks - it delivers a service.
2004 – Turning scandal into example
It was discovered that the industry-standard tubular lock could be opened with a simple household tool. Kryptonite launched a voluntary lock replacement program—uniquely comprehensive worldwide. Over 400,000 locks were replaced for free in 21 countries.
That same year, they introduced the color-coded security rating:
- Yellow: highest security
- Orange: high security
- Grey: medium security
2017 – Introducing the Street Light collection
With the Street Light collection, Kryptonite entered the world of lighting: USB-rechargeable lights that added a new layer to cyclist safety.
