The following is the official position of the manufacturer on this issue. We can also carry out the inspection in our shop, but an appointment is necessary!
What should I do as a cyclist?
First of all, check whether your crankset is covered by the scheme. The levers shown in the picture are covered, with the following model numbers: FC-6800, FC-R8000, FC-9000, FC-R9100, FC-R9100-P. In addition to the model numbers, you should check the production code (indicated by a blue circle in the following picture), of which the following are affected: KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE and RF.
If the crank is not marked with one of the codes listed, there is nothing more to do with the crankset.
Otherwise, contact an approved Shimano dealer for a free inspection, which is expected to start in October. The dealer will check, based on the manufacturer's detailed instructions, whether there are any signs that the crankset may be faulty, and if this is the case, the manufacturer will provide a new crankset free of charge, which the dealer will fit professionally. If a replacement is necessary, the affected crankset should not be used any longer and the replacement should be awaited. Any unusual clicking noise or strange sensation when driving may be a cause for suspicion.
What should I do as the owner of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace?
First: check that the crank falls within the conditions set out in the inspection programme. If the answer is yes, please contact a bicycle dealer to have it checked. You can also have the inspection carried out at our premises, please call us to make an appointment!
How do I know if the crank is included in the inspection?
To determine if your product needs to be inspected, you need to check the model number and production code. These are stamped on the inside of the crank, above the pedal thread.
What is the solution?
Shimano will have all matching gears checked by an authorised Shimano dealer. Shimano will replace cranks that do not pass the inspection process.
How will the replacement crank be different from the previous one?
The new crank uses the latest construction and bonding techniques. There will be minor aesthetic differences compared to the original crank. In some cases, the exact specification may not be available for both the length of the crankshaft and the tooth number assignment of the sprockets.
What happens if an aftermarket (non-Shimano) wattmeter is fitted to the crankset?
Shimano cranks and/or any other product modified by a third party are generally not covered by the warranty, but an exception applies to these controls. Any items found to be defective during the inspection and returned to Shimano will be replaced free of charge without the third party wattmeter.
My crank has passed the inspection, what do I do after that?
We encourage all riders and users to take care of their bikes and equipment. Have your bike regularly adjusted and/or checked. Pay attention to changes in sound effects and the feel of the bike. Changes may indicate wear, breakage or adjustment needs on a particular part of the bicycle.
How long does it take for a replacement crankset to arrive?
Shimano will do everything possible to speed up the arrival of a replacement crankset. However, some sprocket and crankset length combinations may not be in stock. If the replacement gear is temporarily unavailable, Shimano will work with the dealer to ensure proper communication in the event that a replacement part is ready.
